Asteroids are large pieces of rock that orbit the sun. Sometimes, they are Meteors and go in through the Earth's atmosphere. They are way to small to be planets. There is a line of Asteroids called the Asteroid Belt, and they are many asteroids along that line that orbit between Mars and Jupiter. Here are Asteroids in general, but below there are some famous asteroids that are known for size, width, etc..
Ceres is known as the biggest Asteroid in the universe. It is now known to be a dwarf planet like Pluto. Ceres is made of mostly rock and ice and it is one third of the mass in the asteroid belt. Ceres was the first asteroid discovered, but people thought it was a planet. It is hard to see but when it is really dark it can be seen with the naked eye. Ceres is named after the roman goddess of agriculture. Ceres is 600 miles long!
Dwarf Planets are small planets that are to small to be planets, so they are called dwarf planets. For example, an interesting dwarf planet is Pluto, as at first people thought of it as a planet, but then in 2006 scientists said that it was a dwarf planet. Dwarf planets are interesting because they are cool to study on but most are very faraway.
Pluto is one of the most popular dwarf planets. There is still an argument going on, on between the 2 sides: Pluto is a planet, or Pluto is a dwarf planet. Well, as you can see, I put Pluto on the Dwarf Planet page because I think Pluto should be a Dwarf Planet. Pluto is really far, next to Neptune, the planet in the Solar System farthest from the Sun. Pluto is pretty much cold and frozen ice. Pluto is made up of Frozen Methane, Carbon Monoxide, and Nitrogen. It's atmosphere is sometimes affected by it's temperature. Pluto does not really fully orbit the sun.
This planet is the dwarf planet Eris. Eris is actually bigger than pluto! It is the most massive dwarf planet in the solar system known. It has a moon called dysnomia. It was discovered in Palomar Observatory. It orbits the sun. It is the second largest though! It is 2326 + 12 Kilometers! Discovered On January 5th, 2005. Not that long ago in my opinion! It's orbital period is 560 years!
Makemake is another dwarf planet! Funny Name huh? Makemake's diameter is 2/3 pluto. It is the largest object in the Kuiper Belt! Makemake has no known satelites. That means it is special and it's mass can only be estimated. It's surface contains: Methane, Ethane, and scientists think maybe some nitrogen ices. It was discovered in July 2008. ( I honestly do not think that is that long ago!!) Before Makemake was known much, scientists called this dwarf planet "Easterbunny" because it was discovered a little after Easter. It's orbital period is about 310 years.
The dwarf planet Haumea if one of my favorites. It is very special to me. It was discovered in 2004. It's Moons are: Namaka and Hi'iaka. It is beyond Neptune's orbit! It's orbital period is 285 years. Haumea spins on it's axis every 4 hours,(!) Which makes it the FASTEST spinning large object in the universe. You may wonder why Haumea looks like an oval, and that is because of it's rapid spin. Scientists think that Haumea is almost just completely rock. They also think it is covered with a thick ice shell. Haumea also has a dark red spot on it's surface which may contain more minerals than just it's thick ice-ish shell. Haumea is a third as massive as Pluto. Haumea is compared greatly to Pluto, but scientists think that a large object hit Haumea and it became more different than Pluto, like a collision.
Black Holes are big strong wind holes that have a force so strong, it is almost impossible to escape from it's strong suck. There is usually 1 big black hole in the middle of each galaxy. Black holes are created when massive stars die; sometimes they turn into black holes. No person has ever dared to enter one of these mysterious pull-ins, but everyone is sure, whoever goes in, will never come out.
